Wellness means being healthy in mind and body. We all know the importance of wellness in the office in that without it performance, productivity and our overall health suffers. Knowing this, the question then becomes, how do I keep myself balanced in the office? We get it, Sarah keeps changing the office thermostat, Marty slurps his coffee and Karen is constantly on the phone speaking at such a high volume the entire office can hear. Despite all of the distractions, it is important to find ways to stay focused and calm, providing stability for both your mind and body. Here are a few tips to remember to help you center your inner chi while at work.

Get a Good Chair

If you’re spending over eight hours a day in a chair almost every day, investing in a good quality chair will do wonders. Good quality, high back chairs help not only with back support but also by promoting good posture. These back and body benefits will make your work day more enjoyable lessening the fatigue most people feel at the end of the day.

Stay Hydrated

We know this is a basic rule of wellness, but remember that water helps out with physical and mental performance, detoxification and digestion. Consider keeping a water bottle at your desk- it will make it easer to drink water throughout the day. Water will help you feel healthy and refreshed and focused for the rest of the day!

Clean Your Work Area

We understand cleaning your desk may be difficult. We are all too familiar with the stacks of papers and files, pictures and notes from family and three cups of coffee that can clutter up the open surface. However, remember that your keyboard, mouse and telephone all harbor germs and bacteria. Make sure you keep your desk organized and use disinfecting wipes to keep it clean and free of contaminants.

Take it Easy on Your Eyes!

Poor lighting and perpetual computer monitor focus are extremely stressful on your eyes causing fatigue early in the day. Try to simulate outdoor light in the office by getting a small lamp for your work area. In addition, try to give your eyes a rest from the monitor every 20-30 minutes. Take a few moments to close your eyes, look outside or get up and walk around. Taking care of your peepers is paramount to a healthy body!

Get Up and Move!

Take some time for yourself each day at the office to get up, walk around and think about something other than work. Wellness includes a healthy mind. The stressors of work can take a tremendous toll on your mental health. Also, spending eight hours a day sedentary at your desk is clearly not healthy for your body. So take a break and get up! Go walk around! Taking short breaks at the office will help both your mind and body.
