Has business development started to feel a little dull? All those mixers, networking meetings, and lunches spent getting to know “business acquaintances” you don’t really care about. Be honest - if you knew for a fact that your referral sources would never refer you another new piece of business, would you ever talk to them again? Most of us wouldn’t, and that’s why it’s so difficult to sustain any enthusiasm around our networking activities. We market ourselves aggressively for a few months, then burn out and hibernate, then panic when our pipelines get lean, and force ourselves back into the fray.
If any of this sounds familiar, here are three ways you can put that “spark” back into your work life:
Office romances. What’s an employer to do?
Valentine’s Day is this week and quite fittingly, we turn our thoughts to the ever sensitive subject of office romance. And whether or not it’s company culture to frown on personal relationships in the workplace or to look the other way, they do happen. Strong bonds develop when employees work long hours together— and nowhere is that more true than in the intense environment of a small business or start-up. Couple that with social media platforms that keep us connected to our co-workers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and you have the ingredients for office romance.
So the question is, how should you handle it? Look the other way in the hopes that either the relationship will be short-lived and others won’t notice or that one of the employees in the relationship will leave the company and/or department? Or wait until the relationship turns sour and either you are dealing with a sexual harassment complaint or other employee relations issues as employees “take sides” or claim “unfair advantage”? And what about employees losing focus on work projects as they deal with their relationship issues that have spilled over from their personal lives into their work lives? Continue reading
Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and as much as we would love to write some old clichéd post about the best flavor candy heart or whether or not it’s appropriate to buy anyone in your office flowers, we decided to utilize another over-commercialized aspect of the holiday – the romance movie. Romance movies can teach us all sorts of wonderful lessons about never having to say sorry and ordering the right food at the deli, but you can also stretch some of those lessons to help make you fall deeper in love with running a business.
In case this photo is too subtle, the heart indicates they are in love.
Or at least help keep you from wondering why the heck you started a business in the first place.
