Small businesses across the country are opened, and subsequently have to close their doors day by day. Small businesses typically have less resources and have a harder time weathering low periods in their sales and processes. For this reason, it is even more important for new startups to remain continually competitive. Some steps to staying competitive might be obvious, while others can surprise you. Take a look below to see how you can keep up with your competition and push the envelope as you start out.
An often-used phrase in almost any industry is that people should work smarter, not harder. Sometimes, both are required. In order to keep up with your competitors, especially with your direct or local competitors if you are a brick and mortar business, you may need to physically keep up with business. Working longer hours can pay off if you are also adhering to the first part of that adage and are working smarter as well. So if your rivals are working 10 hours a day, maybe it’s time to work 12. Don’t bury yourself in busy work either. Make sure you are staying on top of what’s new in the industry and giving your best effort to every product.
Technology, whether it’s brand new or not, can assist your business in a myriad of ways. Something as simple as changing your outgoing voicemail message so that potential customers know who to call when you’re not available can add to your bottom line. On a more modern note, there are dozens of mobile apps that can help you stay organized, monitor shipments, and project tasks, manage your money, and whole host of other business-specific applications. Some great housekeeping apps and ADT Home Security Packages allow you to monitor and operate your facility’s heat, air conditioning, alarm, and camera systems, and access control are also available to simplify your days and nights leaving you more time to concentrate on making more money.
In a world of electronic messaging which includes not only email, but text messaging, instant messaging, and direct messaging through apps with a different primary use, getting in front of your customers is gold. Make more time to stop in and see your clients and you will raise your relationship with them to a new level, and reinforce their importance (which is great) to you.
Many times knowing you need to stay competitive is half the battle in staying sharp as a business. Do something new or do something tried and true that other industries have done, but either way, keep your business moving forward. Turn staying competitive into having a competitive edge through creativity, innovation, hard work, and perseverance.

I really like your first success tip that's so candid. Success never comes easy, but the rewards in the end are very well worth it.
