NOVO Painting and Property Services — Fantastic B Corps

Did you know that the word NOVO means “anew, refresh, revive” in Latin? At NOVO Painting & Property Services, this word symbolizes their daily work in commercial, residential, and community painting projects. Beyond the paintbrush, NOVO believes in building a relationship through consistent service and it is through their ability to build positive relationships with people and their community that helps create stronger relationships with clients. Read on to find out more about Cole and his Seattle, WA-based B Corp.

NOVO’s simple mission: “Our mission is to develop and maintain positive relationships with our team, clients, and community through quality service, professionalism, and sustainability.”

novo_paintingHow I became aware of B Corps: “I was first introduced to B Corps in 2010 via their free Business Assessment Tool. I found it to be an extremely valuable asset that introduced me to a completely new perspective of doing business that really resonated with me. In my professional career, I was always taught that everything revolves around sales. My bosses only cared about sales. Business consultants told me I needed to embrace the ‘IR or identity role’ and be the salesman even though the methods needed to sell left me feeling disingenuous and misleading.

B Corps allowed me to tap into myself and how I genuinely felt about my approach while working for other businesses. Embracing the B Corp methodology allowed me to see that business could be value-driven and still be successful.

What has been our biggest success story? “We’ve been able to create a reputation for ourselves that is outside the norm from our competitors. We have attracted new significant clients by embracing our values and created a brand amongst prospective employees as a company who does business in a different way that is employee-centric.”

novo_painting_2How relationships allow us to “B the Change” in our community: “We are constantly aware of our relationships with our people, community, and clients. How do we strengthen these relationships? How can we make a greater impact on our people and community thus strengthening relationships with our clients?”

If you want to become a B Corp… “Take a few minutes and go through the B Impact Assessment. It’s best thing you can do. Don’t get discouraged by the in-depth questions because that’s all part of the process. I was first introduced to it in 2010 while working for another company and became a Certified B Corporation in 2017 in a company I started. There is extreme value in the assessment even if you are not yet a Certified B Corporation. Every business can benefit from it.”

Why B Corps matter now more than ever: “I think that the B Corporation movement is more important now than ever before given the current chaotic political environment. Businesses need to be used as change for good because the government is putting it on the bottom of their priority list. Environmental deregulations, tax regulations that discourage middle class donations to non-profits, and environmental considerations are taking a back seat to corporate profits. Businesses have a greater responsibility to take care of their communities and people.

About Cole Palea, Owner of NOVO Painting and Property Services

novo_painting_logoIn Latin, NOVO means “anew, refresh, revive.” This symbolizes not only our daily work and what we can do for a client’s space, but also a revival of my personal values and how they apply to each project. I am committed to creating authentic relationships with clients, employees and the community, and excited to develop new connections every day. Sustainability in the built environment has been a core value of mine throughout my career. My work in latex paint stewardship has evolved over the past few years and continues to move forward.
